Once you've seen as many small bluetooth speakers as I have, it takes something really quite special to capture my full attention and this Lepow Modre Wireless Bluetooth Speaker has done that.



It's said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. If only other companies would follow that advice. Lepow certainly has. The speaker is packaged in a reuseable cup with silicone lid. It's not just a throw-away, it is something you can really use.



Open the cup and there is your speaker and accessories. Included is a 3.5mm male to male audio cable and a MicroUSB to USB cable used for charging the speaker. Both cables are "flat" cables and use high quality casing for the cables. Flat cables are nearly impossible to tangle and I like that Lepow chose to use them.



The speaker won an award for its design and as soon as you see it, you'll agree. It's about 2 3/8" wide and 3 1/2" tall. The stainless steel body (not cheap plastic) is durable and covered in a brightly colored rubber skin. The speaker is not heavy by any means (6.42 ounces) but substantial for its size. The rubber coating gives it a nice feeling in hand and reduces the chance of it slipping, The bottom of the speaker has a non-slip ring around the edge and is also where the only control of the speaker is; the on/off switch.



On the back of the speaker is a MicroUSB charging port. There are 2 LED lights to indicate that charging is taking place or that it is fully charged and a bluetooth/aux LED to indicate pairing mode, or whether bluetooth or aux is being used. When in bluetooth pairing mode, that LED rapidly flashes blue. Once pairing is complete it periodically flashes blue when speaker is active. When using the AUX cable, the LED changes to red.



Hands free sound quality is excellent. Although you cannot initiate, answer or redial a number using the speaker (there are no controls for that on the speaker), sound quality is excellent one the phone hands over the call to the speaker. Unlike some bluetooth speakers that allow the phone to ring through the speaker, this does not do that. Your phone rings, you answer your phone, then the call is handed over to the speaker. One feature of the speaker that did not work with my iPhone 4 is that the speaker is supposed to announce "Incoming Call." It did not do that. It remained silenet until the call transfered to the speaker than worked well as a hands free speaker.



Sound quality is just fantastic for a speaker of this size. It's a full-range sound that even gives bass notes some attention. The overall sound is very nice and give great clarity to vocals. It's a 3W speaker so isn't going to produce tremendous volume levels, but for a small-medium sized room, it will provide adequate loudness. The speaker has no volume control, that is done from the device you are pairing to the speaker.



Battery life is great too. You can expect to get up to 7 hours or so but that will depend on how loud the speaker is played.



My only issue with the speaker is that it does not seem to have a reduced energy standby mode to conserve battery life if no audio is being sent to the speaker. Many speakers will go off or into standby mode after a period of inactivity. This is not a huge big deal but it could leave you with a dead battery the next time you want to use the speaker if you forget to turn it off.



I can't believe what a total package this speaker is. Great packaging, high quality cables, beautifully designed speaker and fantastic sound, It's risen to the top of my small bluetooth speaker pile.
