Britain's Got Talent contestant Lucy Kay has admitted that she has received negative comments about her "sob story".
The opera singer wowed the judges with her singing voice on Saturday night (April 12) but revealed that she has been targeted by bullies in the past.
Speaking to Digital Spy today (April 14), Kay said she has had a "very positive" reaction but added: "There's been some negative comments, but I knew [to expect] that. I think people don't like the whole sob story. But at the end of the day, I think it's good to get the story out there because that's part of me.
"And I think the singing and the story go hand in hand, because that's the reason why I sing. And also, I want other people who have been bullied to actually take note that you can defeat those people by just doing something good with your life and take singing, dancing, music, whatever is your passion - you can do it."
Kay, who was told by judge Simon Cowell not to mention her bullies again, admitted that she is worried about the story taking over her singing.
"I think it's taken over quite a bit already in the papers, and some of the comments and things that can get a bit twisted in all of it - I try not to look at them too much, because I think it can upset you and I think you've got to be a strong person to deal with that," she said.
"Hopefully it'll die down and they can just realise that I am actually on just for my voice. But the story is part of me, so I can't deny it."
Kay - who watched Saturday night's show with her boyfriend but hid "behind a pillow" - admitted that she got emotional when she saw her mother speaking about her history of being bullied.
"I actually cried because of my mum, because she got upset and emotional," she said. "To see your mum get upset when she means the world to you, it's hard to take. And to know that I caused her that pain - you wish that it hadn't happened.
"But I suppose I probably wouldn't be here if it hadn't, so it has a good ending... That's where I get my emotional side from, my mum!"
She added that even her boyfriend was surprised by her performance, saying: "I don't really sing in front of him. I always wait until he goes out to work, and when he comes in I stop! So I think he was impressed with it."
Kay, who has previously performed with Cantamus Girls Choir, also revealed that she feels her performance suffered because she was so nervous about singing solo but explained that she is feeling more confident now.
"I was a little bit disappointed with how I performed," she said. "Before I got the comments I thought, 'Ooh, I've mucked that up'. I know I can do better but I think my nerves just got so much. I was so terrified! But it was an amazing feeling. I'll never forget it.
"Being given the comments from the judges and the actual audience getting up on their feet like that - that was just so surreal. That's given me a confidence boost so if I do get to the live semi-finals, I'm going to do my damnedest to not be nervous and just go out there and give [it my all].
"I've already come this far and I just want to go for it!"
Elsewhere, Kay described the other acts on Saturday night's show as "amazing" and "fantastic", describing Collabro as "wonderful" and "super nice".
"You just didn't expect what they were going to do, and I liked that twist on it," she said. "Light Balance - I think that was something we'd never seen before, and I was mesmerised by it. I was like, 'Wow, they'll win!' I think they could - I think they stand a very good chance."
She also brushed off complaints that salsa-dancing Paddy Jones has already won a Spanish talent show, saying: "I think yeah, good on her. She's the age she is, she does what she does, why not? We've all got one life - go for it.
"I think she actually could win it as well. Gosh, there's so many! I mean, the first show was just incredible with the amount of talent that was on there."
Kay added that she was "shocked" to learn how well Britain's Got Talent had done in the ratings, saying: "When I went out there, I was so nervous because of the audience and the actual judges, and I kind of forgot that the TV cameras were there as well.
"But then you also have at the back of your mind, 'There's going to be that many people watching as well'. I think that really hit home when I watched it back, 'Gosh, it wasn't just me that saw it!'"
Britain's Got Talent continues on Saturday (April 19) at 7pm on ITV.
