Local culture, heritage take centre stage







Many activities are happening in our community this weekend, and all are worthy of your attendance.

The Squamish Historical Society presents the 2014 Squamish Culture and Heritage Festival at Quest University on Friday (May 2) from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday (May 3) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The guest speakers on Friday include Dr. Robert Campbell ("Boozing on the Set Coast - B.C.'s Infamous Beer Parlours") and Bill McLennan ("Speaking to Memory: Images and Voices from St. Michael's Residential School.") On Sunday (May 4) the annual Hike for Hospice takes place at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre overflow field next to the Loggers Sports grounds. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with the hike/walk starting at 1 p.m. If not a participant, please consider making a pledge as your support helps those facing end-of-life issues and the bereaved. The fundraiser is a joint effort by the Squamish Hospice Society and the Rotary Club of Squamish. The day includes a rummage sale, crafts, family fun, a bouncy castle, great refreshments and will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. in the overflow field.

A tradition for many years has been the annual spring concert sponsored by the Sea to Sky Singers. The theme this year is "My Squamish Home" and will feature music of B.C.-based composers including the talented Joanna Schwarz of Squamish. The location is St. John's Anglican Church with performances on Saturday (May 3) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday (May 4) at 2 p.m. Admission is $15 with children 12 years and under admitted free. Pick up tickets at Newport Market, Concrete Blond or at the door.

A 36-strong high school choir will perform a great variety of music including pop, jazz standards and gospel music at the Squamish Seniors Centre on Saturday (May 3) at 10 a.m. The Victoria School of the Arts, directed by Bruce Cable, comes from the Prairies. The cost is $2 and it would be appreciated if you would pre-register by calling (604) 848-6898.

Tonight (Thursday, May 1) at 6:30 p.m., the Squamish Public Library staff will welcome author Dianne Whelan, who will speak on her latest book Base Camp: 40 Days on Everest. Admission is free.

It was heartbreaking to know of the terrible accident sustained by Squamish resident Kenzie Markey while skydiving in Arizona. The "Help Kenzie" fundraiser campaign has raised more than $14,000, but much more is needed. For information on how to donate, please visit http://ift.tt/1fvOjfG.

The Squamish Valley Quilters' Guild will meet at the Sandman Hotel on Wednesday (May 7) at 9 a.m. when members will work on their own projects or help sew a community quilt. Consider the Conversation is a documentary on a taboo subject and will be viewed at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Tuesday (May 6) at 6:30 p.m. The evening is sponsored by the Squamish Hospice Society and it is an important film with a simple goal which is to "inspire culture change that results in end-of-life care that is more person-centred and less system-centred." Special guests include: Dr. Peter Edmunds, medical director of palliative care for Vancouver Coastal Health, as well as Dr. Judith Fothergill, Dr. Allan Bohn and members of the palliative team in Squamish. There is no charge for this evening.

The annual Re-Use-It Fair will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Saturday (May 10) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember, you don't have to take something to the fair, but you are free to take whatever meets your needs.

This is the last weekend the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital will be selling tickets for the annual Spring Mother's Day Raffle, with all funds going towards hospital equipment. The raffle will take place at the gift shop at the hospital on May 9. The WA has purchased television sets at a cost of $800 per bedside and needs $10 per day to pay for the rental of each set. The Auxiliary so far this year has spent $17,000 for hospital equipment.

The first ride of the year for the WOW (Women on Wheels) will be held on Monday (May 5) at 10 a.m. with members meeting at Canadian Tire for a ride downtown. For info call (604) 898-5715.
