Cole Hauser in 'Rogue'
The DirecTV original "Rogue" (Season 2 premieres Wednesday, May 28) stars Thandie Newton as undercover officer Grace Travis. Having exacted revenge for the murder of her son last season, she's now working for the FBI as a handler. One of Travis's agents goes missing and she's forced to go back undercover with a new target: Ethan Kelly, a former soldier turned security consultant working in counter-espionage, played by Cole Hauser ("Chase," "K-Ville").
We talked with Hauser about the new season, the secret that ties Travis to Kelly, and what it's like going from network television to DirecTV.
Cole Hauser in 'Rogue' What can you tell us about Ethan Kelly? God, that's a lot to talk about - he's a pretty colorful character. I'll give you his backstory and then I'll lead up to where the show starts.
He was in law school prior to September 11. When the planes hit the buildings in New York, like a lot of Americans, he joined the Army... ended up going to Ranger school. Went over to Iraq and did four tours in Iraq. Came back, kind of found himself a little lost in America. Got a job in a private security company, went back over, kind of like in the vein of a Blackwater. Met some buddies over there, did their job. Came back - and this is kind of where the show starts - and decided to start a private security company for corporate espionage.
And that's where the first episode kind of lands. He and his military friends and himself all start this business. Which, over the course of the first couple of episodes, the FBI and Thandie Newton's character become very interested in how we got our money, how we got where we are, and what we're into. That's what drew you to the role? Yeah. I mean, he's got a lot of colors. And as an actor, at this point in my career, it's good to have a bunch of different levels to play. He's not a bad guy. In fact, he's an American hero in a lot of ways. He's a great patriot of his country. He's done some wonderful things in his life. He ended up making a mistake, which the whole show's kind of based on. And what you'll find out through the season is that he and his friends have a dark secret, something that went wrong over in Afghanistan. And that will come out during the course of the season.
Which episode or line stands out to you that you'd use to get someone excited about the show? There are a few, but the one that's playing in the trailer right now is pretty good. Which is, "Just tell us where the money is and you live." [Laughs.]
It's an old-school line, but it's one that I've enjoyed watching over and over in the trailer the last few days. Because it says so much about the humanity of these characters. It's all really about power and money. You know what I mean? As far as my side of the story - not the FBI, obviously. But my friends, the people that are associated with us, it's all about that. Watch the Season 2 trailer:
Just being a part of network versus cable. I have nothing bad to say about network, but cable, I think, as far as the writing is concerned, the amount of freedom that you get to play ... You don't feel like you're in a little box; you feel like you're doing a movie. And it's over the course of three months, so it feels like a film.
Matthew, what he's created as characters, across the board - from Alec Newman's character to Brendan Fletcher to Thandie to myself. It's really thorough, and we have the time. In past, with network, it's felt like a bit of a rush. You know, it's hurry up and sprint to the finish line. This has just been an absolute joy. I think cable really is as good or better than film is now.

What else are you watching on TV right now? You know, I like "Rectify." A friend of mine's on there, Aden Young. Obviously, "True Detective" with [Matthew] McConaughey, I thought, was tremendous. As far as my style, I like that kind of storytelling. I think Nic Pizzolatto did an amazing job as the creator. Woody [Harrelson] was terrific.
What else? I've been watching a ton of documentaries lately. Haven't been watching a whole bunch of television lately, but those shows are two of my favorites. Season 2 of "Rogue" premieres Wednesday, 5/28 at 8 p.m. on DirecTV.
